The VCE in China Teacher’s role is to act as a specialist Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) teacher to students studying the VCAA VCE course in China. Thomas Carr College (Melbourne) and Wenzhou No. 21 Middle School work in partnership to deliver this dual certificate program. Most of the VCE subjects are taught by Wenzhou No. 21 Middle School’s own teachers in English, who are mentored by an experienced VCE teacher at Thomas Carr College. The program is managed from both Australia and China and students on completion of their studies undertake further study in Australia and worldwide.

The successful candidate will be supported by a Thomas Carr College mentor in Melbourne and through other professional development opportunities such as the annual VCE Teacher Induction Program at Thomas Carr College and VCE Transnational Conference held annually in China.

Organisational relationships
The successful applicant will be employed by Wenzhou No. 21 Middle School and supported by the Thomas Carr College staff; including the Director of International Programs and a VCE teacher who will act as a mentor. This position reports to the VCE Coordinator in Wenzhou.

Specific areas of responsibility

1.1 Provide effective instructional classroom teaching practice underpinned by best practice pedagogy.
1.2 Ensure appropriate teaching methods for students for which English is a second language
1.3 Use a variety of formative and summative assessment task formats to provide for effective feedback
1.4 Exercise appropriate pastoral care of students
1.5 Ensure a personal professional approach to teaching duties
1.6 Participate in co-curricular activities including relevant promotional events
1.7 Liaise closely with a mentor colleague in Melbourne and undertake cross marketing and moderation
1.8 Provide feedback to students and parents through written reports and parent teacher interviews

Key Selection Criteria
2.1 Two years teaching experience and registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching or equivalent and ability to receive a Chinese Working visa.
2.2 A demonstrated capacity to provide exemplary teaching characterised by enthusiasm, a desire for improvement, a commitment to excellence, flexibility and a high level of written, verbal and communication skills, patience, warmth, empathy and interest in students’ academic and emotional wellbeing
2.3 Knowledge and experience teaching the VCE curriculum
2.4 Experience teaching VCE students/students for which English is a second language, knowledge, respect and interest in other cultures and a willingness to work overseas for an extended period of time
2.5 A demonstrated ability to work independently and show a high level of initiative and cultural awareness and sophistication.

Salary Package
The successful candidate will receive:

• 21,000RMB (after tax) per month negotiable.
• Fully furnished modern apartment (utilities provided free of charge) or accommodation allowance.
• Meals during term time
• One return international economy airfare per year of service with airport transfers
• Retainer bonus paid on completion of two full years of service.

Other Information
Wenzhou No. 21 Middle School is located minutes from the centre of Wenzhou. Wenzhou is on the prosperous east coast of China, one hour by air from Shanghai. Wenzhou is also connected to Shanghai by fast train. The VCE program is delivered at Wenzhou No. 21 Middle School which is also a boarding school.

The school has an enrolment of 2600 students and VCE Campus has approximately 150 students at present. Class sizes are by Australian standards. Classroom facilities are modern and include multimedia platforms. Teachers are provided with suitable office space and internet access.

The VCE is a senior secondary certificate of education recognised within the Australian Qualification Framework. The VCE is designed to be completed by school students over a minimum of two years.

Each VCE study is designed to provide a two year program. Units 1 and 2 are nationally and internationally benchmarked to a Year 11 standard. Similarly Units 3 and 4 level are benchmarked to a Year 12 standard. Outcomes are the basis for satisfactory completion of a VCE unit. Each VCE unit includes a set of two to four outcomes. Satisfactory completion of a unit is determined by the school, in accordance with VCAA requirements. Student levels of achievement for Units 1 and 2 are determined by the school. Student levels of achievement at Units 3 and 4 are assessed using school-based assessment and external examinations. The majority of students enrolled in this program upon graduation enroll in tertiary study in Australia.
