Q : Do I need a Bachelor’s degree to join English Gang?
A : Our teacher’s education level is very important to us, and our families expect a high quality English education. Thus, we require that our teachers have at least a Bachelor’s degree. Rarely we can make exceptions for candidates with 3 years experience teaching English face to face with students and/or over 1 year experience teaching children online. Having a TESOL or TEFL certificates is an added bonus, but that is not necessary.
Q : Do I have to be a native English speaker?
A : Yes, it is very important that you are a native English speaker from either the USA, Canada, UK, Australia or New Zealand. In very rare instances we will accept candidates who were born in other countries that have spent the majority of their lives in one of the aforementioned countries, have a neutral accent, and have a strong background in ESL education.
Q : What time should I be available to teach?
A : Our peak times in Thailand are Monday-Friday 4-10pm, and Saturday-Sunday 8am–10pm. Making yourself available during those times will give you a higher probability of getting booked. It's perfectly fine to open your schedule outside of those times as well. We require that you open your schedule a minimum of 5 hours (10 slots) per week.
Q : What is the pay rate and when do I get paid?
A : Teachers are paid anywhere between $10.00 - $16.00 USD per hour of teaching, and you will be paid by the 5th of the month for the previous month. Your pay rate is based off of your experience, interview and mock class, and it can increase depending on how many classes you teach per month. You will also receive bonuses for showing up to class on time, and bringing in new students. If your balance is below $30 USD, we will carry that amount over to the next month. Depending on your country of residence, applicable taxes will be applied.
Q : What are the peak hours for me to teach?
A : Most of our students are based in Thailand, and the peak hours in Thailand are Monday - Friday from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM and 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.
Q : How many hours am I required to teach?
A : We require that you open your schedule for at least 5 hours (10 slots) per week. There is no maximum, but the top 10% of our teachers average 35 hours per week. We do not recommend teaching more than 40 hours per week as that can quickly lead to teacher burnout.
Q : How should I set my schedule?
A : Teachers must submit their weekly availability one month in advance. Teachers' weekly schedules are sent out each Saturday at 12:00 PM Bangkok time. Teachers must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. All English Gang teachers should check their emails daily for new bookings. (on this note, we need to look at how teachers get class reminders sent to them)
About English Gang
If you look at most problems in Thailand, the key to fixing them is education. Lack of access to high quality English education is an issue that English Gang (EG) is striving to fix. Once Thai children are able to learn English, a gigantic world of knowledge will open up to them via different forms of media, mainly from the Internet.
Access to high quality online English as a Second Language (ESL) education has grown tremendously in countries like Korea, Japan and China with an estimated 1.5 billion people across the world studying ESL. This is opening doors and creating worldwide opportunities for those students.
The Internet in Thailand is good and it is getting better every week. On top of that, there are many highly qualified English teachers from the USA to the UK that are passionate about teaching English. By providing the teachers and students with English Gang curriculum inside of an easy to use platform, we are well positioned to improve Thailand on a nationwide level.
